planting dulb daffodil

Daffodils are a popular flower not only here, but in large parts of the world. You may wonder How deep should daffodil bulbs be planted?

A daffodil bulb should be planted in a hole twice as deep as the tip of it. For example, if the tip is 2 inches deep, the hole must be planted in a 4-inch deep hole.

However, a 3-inch daffodil bulb needs to be planted in a 5 inches deep hole. It’s recommended to water well after the daffodil bulbs have been planted and then cover the soil with a great layer of mulch.

This will help the soil retain moisture, but it also gives a nice appearance, where the soil has been dug up.

How do you choose daffodil bulbs?

It’s important to notice that a lot of daffodil varieties will need a period of cold weather during the winter, to be able to stimulate blooms for the following spring.

This means they will grow best in cooler areas and you will get the most success if you choose an area in zone 7 or lower, but it all depends on the variety of the daffodils.

However, some varieties of daffodils will be able to grow well in warmer areas in zone 8 or higher.

In total, there are hundreds of different varieties of daffodils to choose from, but a good start is to choose a variety that can live and grow well in the area in which you live

Besides the many different varieties, there are also miniature daffodils and varieties with giant flowers.

Some daffodil bulbs can be bought with orange, gold, white, or pink flowers. There are even bicolor flowers which can contain two different colors on the same flowers.

However, there are some early, mid-, and late-season bloomers, so if you do proper planning you can enjoy around 3 months of daffodil blooms.

In other words, there is something for everyone!

Can daffodil bulbs be planted too deep?

growing daffodil

If you plant your daffodil bulbs too deep in the soil, the bulbs can suffocate and rot. A hole of 3-4 inches deep is best to plant the bulbs in.

Daffodils bulbs planted too deep may never emerge above the surface of the ground. Expect to see the daffodil put out leaves as a sign of survivors, but no blooms and will often contain a long whitish stem between the bulbs and the green leaves above the ground.

Daffodils will always try to adapt to the situation, but if you tend to plant the bulbs too deep you can expect to see poor results. Luckily daffoduls are low-maintenance plants and are possible for everyone to maintain and see good results.

However, if you have planted your daffodil bulbs too deep and want to move them to replant them, you can do this in the fall, if you have marked the soil, so you know where the bulbs are planted in the bed. By doing this you will be able to dig up struggling daffodil bulbs and replant them for next year.

It is better to be on the safe side with these flowers and plant the bulbs closer to the surface of the earth than to “bury them” deep in the ground.

How to plant daffodil bulbs indoors

To be able to grow daffodils with success indoors, should you plant several bulbs in the same pot.

  • If you have smaller pots, do not plant more than 2-3 bulbs in the same pot.
  • If you have larger pots, you can plant between 3-5 bulbs in the same pot.

I have seen the most success in growing plants indoors by planting them in masses and not just 1 bulb in each pot, which is more attractive to larger plants.

When you plant the daffodil bulbs, plant them in a great multi-purpose compost, with the tips on the bulbs just below the surface.

Remember to water well once the bulbs have been planted and leave them in a spot in your house that is warm and preferably a place where there is plenty of sun every day.

If you want to have your daffodils bloom in time for Christmas, you have to plant your bulbs in September.

Aftercare of daffodils

Try to avoid placing your newly planted daffodil bulbs near radiators or fireplaces due to the high amount of heat. This can make the plants dry out quicker and increase the chance of the plants dying.

Instead, keep the plants near a window with a lot of daily sunlight and natural light during the day.

However, we are aware that if the leaves on the plant appear faster than the flower buds, it may be because it has been too warm.

It’s therefore best to move and find another cooler place in your house until the flower heads on the plant appear.

When the soil in your indoor pots feels dry, fill it up regularly to get the best conditions for your bulbs to grow.

When Daffodil die

When the daffodil has bloomed, try to look for a dry and not least frost-free place where the bulbs have a chance to die down.

When they have returned to their bulbous state, it’s time to replant the bulbs outside preferably in a sheltered and sunny spot so you can see them bloom again next year.

How many daffodil bulbs should I plant together?

how many daffodil dulbs can you plant together

It’s recommended to not plant more than up to six daffodil bulbs together if it’s in open ground. If you plant more than six bulbs together, they tend to quickly become congested.

However, if you plant daffodil bulbs in pots, you can plant as many as you want together because here you can replant the bulbs in the ground in one or two years after they have been planted in the pot.

If you want to plant your daffodil bulbs in a container, I recommend you to try to find and use a peat-free container and hereafter find a great sunny spot in your garden to your container.

Remember to water your pots or containers so the soil remains moist, but don’t get wet and sloppy.

You can leave your daffodil bulbs in a pot for many years, but you’ll then have to remove and replace the compost above the bulbs every year. Otherwise, they’ll not stay healthy and die.

Do Daffodils need to be deadheaded?

It’s not necessary to deadhead daffodils immediately after flowering, while tulips and other flowers need to be deadheaded immediately.

How you treat your daffodils after they bloom is important and will influence how well they’ll perform the following year. Meaning it’s important to treat them well if you want to succeed.

By removing the deadhead flowers, you’ll help the bulbs to mature and flower well the following year.

Follow these 3 simple tips for success:

  1. You don’t have to remove the whole stem, since it has a value for the plant and will be able to die back naturally.
  2. By deadheading daffodils, you’ll stop the plants from wasting energy and making seed heads, instead of returning them into the bulbs to prepare the bulbs for next year’s season.
  3. It doesn’t only apply to daffodils that deadheading is important. It’s an important task for every gardener to be able to see the flowers bloom next year.
